Are you scared or anxious about using it on a game project?

Worried about any technical surprises that might come your way?

Nervous about being asked to implement a certain feature and responding with "i've never done that before"? 😬

One of the essential skills we need nowadays is knowledge of middleware.

And if you're reading this then you've decided to choose FMOD as your audio middleware of choice (Yay!) and now it’s time to dive deep into your learning of it.

First of all there's plenty of documentation on how FMOD works. The features that it contains and all the details about how they work. Just check out their introductory YouTube series as well as my FMOD in 2 mins series.

This is a great start, but what’s missing is context: what will it be like using it on a real game?

Understanding your tools is one thing. Diligently reading through documentation whilst we await our first paid opportunity or game jam to use it.

After reading the documentation, you open up FMOD ready to go and… you stare blankly at the Event Editor wondering how to start. Oh yes, that Blank-DAW-syndrome has conveniently transferred itself into a Blank-middleware-syndrome *shudder*.

You feel the motivation and hunger to practise your middleware skills but you lack the structure and context to base this around.

Now you may have looked for a game jam to solve this lack of context. Great idea! However, sometimes these jams are so short they don’t allow time for middleware. Or perhaps the game ends up being so simple in terms of audio that we’re never really challenged all that much. Also we have to hope that new game jams will present us with the unknown challenges we don’t know about yet.

Maybe you’ve gone through the FMOD + Unity guides from their website. Another great resource! However, once again the FMOD side of things is very straight forward since it’s focusing more on the basics as well as game engine integration.

You could get a mentor.

If you're subscribed to my newsletter you'll know this is something i encourage everybody to do. No matter what level or stage of your career you might be at. And you can check out the GAL portal to find one.
But of course, availability is a big factor to consider. Not every mentor will specialise in FMOD. And no other mentor has taken the time to create these many middleware exercises as we have.

So after all this, we’re still missing that creative confidence to solve the most common video game audio scenarios.

Introducing...

What this course isn't...

If you're looking for a guide on how FMOD works, this isn't it! As mentioned above, there are plenty of resources out there already.

Instead this course is an active way of practising how to use and apply the features within FMOD with real-game scenarios.

This course DOES NOT teach audio scripting or programming inside of game engines. It focuses instead on the creative side of implementation before your game engine workflow.

You'll learn how to solve common game audio scenarios. By the end of it you will know not only how to use FMOD's most powerful features confidently, but you'll be confident enough to tackle any problem that comes your way in the future.

That's what we are after all, problem solvers. Who's skills are in audio and implementing adaptive systems.
